Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a condition where there is either swelling or inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eyes. The conjunctiva is a transparent layer of tissue that forms the lining of the inner surface of the eyelids and the surface of the white part of the eye. 


Conjunctivitis is often called 'disco eyes' in Mauritius

Symptoms of Conjuctivitis

There are different types of conjunctivitis. There symptions are as follows:


- Allergic Conjunctivitis

Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include burning sensation, itchy and watery eyes. It may also be accompanied with runny nose, feeling of stuffiness and sensitivity to light. This is a non-contagious type of conjunctivitis.


- Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis include sticky eyes, yellowish or green-yellow discharge in the corner of the eye. In certain cases, the stickiness may cause eyelids to be stuck together. This type of conjunctivitis is contagious via contact with hands or things that might have had contact with the infected eyes. 


- Viral Conjunctivitis

Symptoms of viral conjunctivitis include itchy and watery eyes or sensitivity to light. It may affect one eye or both eyes at a time. This type of conjunctivitis is highly contagious and can spread through coughing as well as sneezing.

- Allergic Conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis are caused by allergens which are eye irritants such as dust, pollen, animal hair. Allergic conjunctivitis may also be seasonal specially those that occur because of pollen.


- Bacterial Conjunctivitis

This type of conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria and may harm the eyes if left untreated.


- Viral Conjunctivitis

Viral conjunctivitis is caused by virus but recovery usually occurs within several days without any medical treatment.
