Diabetic retinopathy is a sight threatening condition that can affect diabetic patients. The condition affects the blood vessels that occur in the retina, which is the light sensitive layer of the eyes. The blood vessels may swell and leak or there might even be the formation of new blood vessels on the retina.
Diabetic retinopathy is generally symptom-less until the condition worsens. In those cases, the following symptoms may occur:
- Sudden surge in the number of floaters
- Blurring of vision
- Seeing dark areas in the field of vision
- Poor vision at night
- The perception of faded colours
Blurry Vision
Diabetic retinopathy occurs to the the effect of the high levels of blood sugar onto the blood vessels that occur in the retina of the eyes. Diabetes can cause blockage in the blood vessels, hence causing leakages and swellings of the vessels. New vessel formations then occur in order to make up for the blocked vessels. The new blood vessels however can break or leak easily.
Your optometrist is able to detect diabetic retinopathy during a routine eye test.
Following the eye test, your optometrist will educate you about the condition and advise you on the best options available to you.
