Floaters are seens as tiny specks, flecks and spots that move around in the field of vision. Floaters are common and usually there is nothing to worry about when seeing floaters.
If you experience a sudden increase in the number of floaters, especially if accompanied with flashes of light, you should get medical attention immediately.
Our eyes contain a jelly-like substance called vitreous humour which is found in the middle part of the eyeball. With age the vitreous has a tendency of becoming more watery. Floaters are small debris in the vitreous humour and in essence occur when clumps of the vitreous humour start moving around within this watery substance.
These debris then creates shadows on certain parts of the retina giving the impression of having something floating in the front of the eyes.
Floaters are generally harmless. Your optometrist is able to take note of their presence during a routine eye test.
Following the eye test, your optometrist will educate you about the condition and advise you on the best options available to you.
