Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of disorders leading to progressive damage to the optic nerve (the part that carries information from the eyes to the brain). It is a serious condition which is associated with the build up of pressure in the eyes and can result in permanent loss of vision.

Symptoms of Hyperopia

Contrary to common belief, glaucoma typically does not cause pain and does not show any symptom until loss of vision is noticeable.

In cases of acute angle closure glaucoma, which is a less common type of glaucoma, there may be sudden blurring of vision, halos, eye pain, nausea and vomiting. In any event you experience these symptoms please see an Ophthalmologist or go to an Eye Hospital for an immediate evaluation.

Causes of Hyperopia

Generally, glaucoma is caused due to the eye's inability to drain aqueous humor fast enough which in turn causes an increase in the pressure inside the eye. The increased pressure affects the eye's optic nerve hence eventually leading to a permanent loss of vision. However it should be noted that there are various types of Glaucoma and hence the exact cause would be dependant on the type of glaucoma.

Since the symptoms of glaucoma do not usually show until there is a noticeable loss of vision, we recommend that you have regular eye examinations. People with a family history of glaucoma should also have regular eye checks. Your optometrist is able to detect glaucoma during a routine eye test.

Following the eye test, your optometrist will educate you about the condition and advise you on the best options available to you.
