Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error where the point of focus lies in front of the retina. This is because the myopic eyeball tends to be longer in relation to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye. In myopia, close objects look clear but distant objects appear blurred.
Also known as nearsightedness, myopic people are able to see nearby objects quite clearly, but find it difficult to see things that are farther away.
In cases of uncorrected myopia, the symptoms could include the following:
Since the myopic eyeball is longer relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye, the light rays end up focusing in front of the retina, rather than directly on its surface.
Typically, myopia begins in childhood and a person may have a higher risk of myopia if their parents are nearsighted. In majority of the cases the progression of myopia slows down considerably at early adulthood, however there are cases where they continue to increase with age.
Your optometrist is able to detect myopia during a routine eye test. Myopia may be corrected with either glasses, contact lenses, or even surgery.
Following the eye test, your optometrist will educate you about the condition and advise you on the best options available to you.
