Presbyopia

Presbyopia is an age related condition where the eye's ability to focus at near object diminishes. It is caused by the reduction in the flexibility of the lens in the eyes. People can experience the symptoms of presbyopia from the age of 40 onwards. 

Symptoms of Presbyopia

Someone who is presbyopic will have issues with near work and will have a tendency to hold their reading materials or phones a bit further than usual in order to be able to read. In cases of uncorrected presbyopia, the symptoms could include the following:

  • Headaches
  • Eyestrain
  • Visual Fatigue

Presbyopia occurs due to changes in the proteins in the lenses, which make the lens more rigid and less elastic over time. 

Furthermore age-related changes also occur in the muscle fibers that help the lens to change shape. The reduction in elasticity makes it more difficult for the eyes to focus at near.

Your optometrist is able to detect presbyopia during a routine eye test. Presbyopia may be corrected with either glasses, or contact lenses..
